Being a mom is hard, and life will throw plenty of challenges your way. Having a daughter is a challenge in itself, but having a redhead daughter who’s unique is something special. If you’re a mom with or without red hair who has a redhead daughter, here are a few tips for you.

1. Encourage her to love her red hair
A lot of redheads are teased for their hair, and as a kid that isn’t easy. Encourage her to love her hair, even when she doesn’t want to. She might not appreciate it when she’s young but she will when she’s older, and knowing that you always loved her red hair will help her learn to love it too.

2. Let her know why red hair is special
Hair color might seem trivial, but when your hair color makes up less than 2% of the population, it’s something to be proud of. Help her understand why she’s special and what makes her unique.
3. Let her go through phases
Lots of redheads go through a phase where they don’t like their red hair or just want to fit in. If she’s dead set on dying her hair, talk with her about the choice and ultimately, let her make her own decision. It’s only hair and it will grow back. It might make her feel more comfortable and ultimately it might make her realize she does love her red hair.
4. Help her learn about makeup
If your daughter chooses to wear makeup when she’s a teen, it’s important to help her find things that work for her. Many redheads struggle with not finding shades light enough for them or only having options meant for blondes and brunettes.

5. Let her know you’re always there
If you’re not a redhead yourself, you might not fully understand some of the struggles a young redhead can go through. Young redheads have a lot to learn about self-love and confidence, so just be there for her however you can.
