A Step By Step Guide For Redheads: No Frizz Curls

With a little help from the H2BAR Microfiber Hair Towel

If you have curly or wavy red hair, you know how annoying it is to have your curls go frizzy as soon as they dry. Following a curly hair routine can help to reduce frizz in all types of curly and wavy hair. Here’s your step-by-step guide to no-frizz curls for redheads:

Step 1: Use hydrating curly hair products

Curly and wavy hair needs extra hydration. That’s why it’s important to use hydrating products geared towards curly hair. Generally speaking, those with curly hair want to avoid products with sulfates because they strip your hair of its natural oils and can cause frizz and dehydration. Focus instead on products like aloe, coconut oil, shea, and argan oils. The one time you should use a sulfate product is when using a clarifying shampoo to reset your scalp and remove buildup. Clarifying shampoo isn’t for frequent use, and should only be used every 3-5 washes or as needed.

Step 2: Comb while your hair is wt

Brushing your hair while it’s damp or dry can cause frizz and breakage. Instead, comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb while it’s soaking wet in the shower. This is how you can detangle and spread the product evenly. Combing wet, curly hair helps prevent breakage and minimizes frizz. It’s easier to detangle when wet, reducing stress on the hair shaft and promoting healthier curls for redheads or anyone with curly hair.

Step 3: Leave your hair wet

When you’re done showering, resist the urge to squeeze all the water out of your hair. Leaving the hair wet will allow the products to disperse more evenly and add moisture to the curls. If your hair does dry out, you can always spray it with water before going in with your curl products.

Step 4: Apply curly hair products

Apply your leave-in conditioner, curl cream, and mousse/gel. These products will help to hydrate and form your curls while also reducing frizz. The curl routine products you use will depend greatly on whether your hair is curly or wavy and how curly your hair is.

Step 5: Scrunch/plop with H2BAR microfiber towel

Scrunching the curl products into your wet hair can help to distribute them evenly. Redheads, like others with curly hair, can benefit from using a microfiber hair towel because it’s gentler than traditional towels. Microfiber helps reduce friction, preventing frizz and breakage commonly associated with curly hair. It also absorbs excess water without disrupting the natural curl pattern, promoting defined and less tangled red curls.

To plop curly red hair, follow these steps:

1. Lay your microfiber towel flat on a surface.
2. Flip your hair forward and position your curls onto the center of the towel or T-shirt.
3. Fold the sides of the towel or T-shirt over your hair, creating a “plop.”
4. Secure the plop by tying or using a hair clip.
5. Leave your hair plopped for 15-30 minutes to allow curls to set and excess water to be absorbed.
6. Unwrap your hair and let it air-dry or use a diffuser for added volume.

Plopping helps enhance and define your red curly hair by encouraging natural curl formation while minimizing frizz.

Step 6: Air dry or diffuse

Diffusing your hair will help to reduce frizz the most, but you can also air dry your curls. If you choose to air dry, try not to touch your hair too much and leave it down to dry fully. Air drying is beneficial for curly red hair because it helps maintain the natural curl pattern and reduces frizz. Heat from blow dryers can cause moisture loss, leading to dryness and increased frizz for curly hair. Allowing your hair to air dry helps retain its natural moisture, resulting in more defined and healthier curls. It’s a gentle approach that supports the unique needs of curly red hair, promoting a more vibrant and controlled appearance.

Step 7: Apply oils to break up clumps

Once your hair is dry, you can break up the clumps of curls with a hydrating hair oil. Avoid tugging the curls or rubbing them too much. Rake your fingers through the clumps with a bit of oil to help add shine and reduce frizz

Step 8: Curly hair maintenance

Between wash days, the best way to reduce frizz is to apply hair oils, sleep in a satin hair wrap, or on a satin pillow case. Avoid brushing your curls and just use a wide tooth comb when needed.
