Women’s Health Week: 6 Healthy Reminders for Redheads

Women’s Health Week is May 12th through May 15th. Women’s health differs greatly from men’s health, and in many countries, including the United States, there’s less education and more misinformation on women’s health. Being healthy isn’t just about how much you weigh, or how much you work out. Your health plays a huge role in your well-being and it’s important to stay healthy. In honor of Women’s Health Week, here are 6 healthy redhead-focused habits you should be doing. If you’re already doing all these things, awesome! We’re so proud of you. If you’re not, this is a gentle reminder to make a call and set up that appointment because your health matters. Take your time and do one task at a time. We’re still proud of you!

Here are some reminders to keep yourself healthy:

Have a physical

If you haven’t been to the doctor in a while, book a physical with your primary care provider. Or if you haven’t established a primary care provider, do that! You need someone you can see annually or when any general concerns arise. Getting a physical gives you a baseline for where your health is at. Then if there are any issues you can work with them to find a specialist for further care.

Visit the dentist

Tooth health is so important and bad teeth can lead to many other issues in your body. The dentist is something a lot of redheads have a fear of, but it’s important to go at least once per year. Get a cleaning and have your teeth checked, and be sure to stay on top of your brushing and flossing at home. Want some inspo? See your gynecologist

For women specifically, it’s important to have a gynecologist you trust. Seeing the gynecologist is a very personal and private matter and you want to feel comfortable. Your gynecologist isn’t just there to give you your dreaded pap smear. They can also help you with family planning, breast exams, and other women’s wellness exams. Often, a woman’s gynecologist is the first to notice a health concern including things like high blood pressure and thyroid issues. 

Go to the dermatologist

Skin health is important for everyone, but especially redheads. With an increased risk of skin cancer, it’s always a good idea to have a dermatologist you trust and can visit whenever you have a concern. You can get an annual skin check-up to make sure there are no issues, and of course, talk to them about any skin questions you have regarding your face or body. 

Visit your eye doctor

For redheads who wear glasses or contacts, visiting the eye doctor regularly is a no-brainer, but for redheads who have good vision, you might not think twice. Even if you don’t think you need some sort of vision correction, it’s good to visit the eye doctor every few years to confirm your eyes are still doing well. Doing so can help detect early indications of ocular diseases.

Seek out mental health help

Women deal with a lot, and it’s good to have someone to talk to. Speaking with a licensed mental health counselor or therapist can help to ease some of that burden. Mental health help isn’t just for those who are depressed, it’s a way to keep your mind as healthy as your body. Seeking mental health help is a personal choice and also one that may not be in the budget for some people. If you feel you need mental health help — even if you just feel stressed or moody — please consult your options. You may be able to find free or low-cost help, or have coverage through your insurance you’re unaware of.
