What is considered “strawberry blonde”?
Strawberry blonde is a term used to describe a light, warm hair color that’s somewhere between a true ginger color and a natural blonde. As you probably know, red hair is a color spectrum. Most redheads have some darker hues and some lighter hues in their hair which gives it its gorgeous dimension. The more dark (brown) you have the more auburn your hair looks. The more light (blonde) you have, the more strawberry blonde your hair looks. If you have an even amount of light and dark, or maybe just red and orange hues, you would be considered more of a “true ginger” redhead.
Just like red hair is a spectrum, so is strawberry blonde hair. Some strawberry blonde hair is lighter and more on the blonde end, while others are more orange/red and on the ginger-end of the spectrum.
Are strawberry blondes redheads? How do we know?
The age-old question is, are strawberry blondes redheads? We know so. Strawberry blonde is one of the lightest shades of red hair and like we’ve said, it’s a spectrum. If you feel like a redhead, you’re a redhead! But if you’re unsure, or need a little more proof here’s a series of questions you can consider to help you determine if you are a “redhead”.
- Is your strawberry blonde hair natural? Strawberry blonde hair, like ginger hair, is pretty rare, especially in adults. If your hair color is natural then chances are you’ve got the redhead gene and would be considered a redhead. If your hair isn’t natural, and you’ve had it colored and warmed up, chances are you’re a natural blonde, not a redhead. If your hair is colored, but only blonde has been added, then you might be a redhead.
- Did your hair look red when you were younger? Think about your hair when you were a kid. Was it redder? If you’re over the age of 40, think about your hair as a teen or early twenties, was it more red/ginger? Lots of redheads have more ginger hair when they are younger, and as they get older it fades and loses vibrancy. Your strawberry blonde may actually be red hair that’s diluted with white/blonde hairs from aging or just faded red hair.
- Do you have other redhead features? Freckles and fair skin aren’t synonymous with redheads, but they are very common traits amongst redheads. If you have fair skin and/or freckles you’re much more likely to be considered a redhead by others.
- Does red hair run in your family? Red hair has to be passed down by both parents, so look for the redhead gene in your family. If one of your parents, grandparents, or siblings is a redhead, you’ve probably got the gene.
