Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week, we’re answering a question from Instagram that reads: “Can beard dye work to dye our eyebrows red?” This is a great question, and something we know a lot of redheads might not be aware of! Most redheads have light reddish blonde brows (and eyelashes) and often want them to be darker in color. For many redheads, using a redhead brow product is adequate, but others want something more permanent. Here’s everything you need to know about tinting your brows, and how to do it with beard dye.

How can redheads tint their brows?

First off, to answer this question: YES! Beard dye is the best at-home way for redheads to tint their brows. It’s relatively mess-free, easy to get the hang of, and super cost-effective. Many redheads opt to use the brand Just for Men Beard Dye . It’s a common brand you can find in the drugstore, or buy online.  Redheads usually use the shade blonde or the shade light red-brown.

To go about tinting your brows you need 5 things: beard dye, a small angled brush, Vaseline and/or Q-tips, and makeup wipes. Wash and dry your face, removing any skincare, SPF, or makeup. If you’re new to dyeing your brows, we suggest applying Vaseline to the skin surrounding the brow. This acts as a barrier and helps prevent any skin staining.

Step 1: Mix a pea-sized amount of beard dye and developer according to the package.

Step 2: Apply to your brows with a small angled brush. The box will come with a brush, and you can use that but for the sake of precision, we like a small brush. Make sure all your brow hairs are fully saturated with the product. You can also comb through them with a clean spoolie to distribute the product more evenly.

Step 3: Once you’ve applied the product, clean up around the brow with a Q-tip if you did not apply Vaseline. If you did you can leave it, or clean it up, it’s your choice. The box will say to leave the product on for 5 minutes. For first-time tinters, we recommend no more than 1 minute. Wipe off the beard dye with a makeup wipe until the wipe comes away clean. Your brows should look darker and will continue to darken over the next few hours.

The frequency with which you re-dye your brows is up to you. Some redheads choose to do so every week or two, while others may go several weeks to months. Your brows will begin to fade over time, and that’s how you know when to reapply the beard dye.

Always patch test

You might be nervous at the prospect of combing a foreign substance into the brows. That is why we highly recommend a patch test. After mixing the dye according to the instructions, brush a tiny bit onto the tail end of your right or left brow to see how it will turn out. And, if you’re not sure about your color, go one shade lighter. You can always leave it on longer, but the biggest issue is that people’s brows get tinted too dark and they’re unhappy with how dark they are.

How do you style your new brows?

Having tinted brows is a game changer. You’ll wake up with darker brows every single day and it won’t wash off when you shower, sweat, or swim. To style your new brows, we love the Finally Have Brows® Clear Brow Gel for shaping and taming. You can also use the Finally Have Brows® Ultra Fine Pencil to define and fill sparse areas. When you need a full glam look, Finally Have Brows® Tinted Brow Gels are the perfect addition and will blend seamlessly with your brow color.

Storing sunscreen in different places ensures it’s easily accessible wherever you are, reducing the risk of forgetting it. Whether it’s in your bag, car, or by the door, having multiple locations can help you remember to apply it regularly, especially when you’re out and about. Redheads and sunscreen go so well together which is why it’s so important to keep reapplying sunscreen every 1.5-2 hours to maintain proper coverage. Keeping your redhead skin safe this summer is super important and we know it can be hard to remember, but if you keep sunscreen in these certain spots, you’ll always be prepared. Just remember, to maintain the effectiveness of sunscreen, it’s important to store it properly. The best places to keep your sunscreen are:

Cool, Dry Place: Store sunscreen in a cabinet or drawer away from direct sunlight and heat sources, such as near a stove or in a car during summer.

Room Temperature: Keep it at room temperature, typically between 68-77°F (20-25°C). Avoid places where the temperature fluctuates widely.

Travel Bag or Cooler: When on the go, especially to the beach or pool, keep sunscreen in a cooler bag or insulated container to protect it from heat.

Avoid storing sunscreen in places like your car, beach bag left in the sun, or on a window sill to prevent degradation of its active ingredients.

With that in mind, store your sunscreen in the following places but make sure to read the description carefully:

1. Keep sunscreen in your purse

Having sunscreen in your purse means you’ll always be prepared. Just pop a small travel-sized bottle in, or opt for a spray you can apply over your makeup. You won’t have to worry about leaving home without it, and you’ll be ready to reapply when the time is right.

2. Keep sunscreen in your car — but be careful!

Having sunscreen in your car keeps you prepared at all times, plus it’s good to apply it to your hands before driving. Hands are one of the spots that show signs of aging first, and wearing SPF can reduce that. Just be cautious of the temperature if you live in a very hot or cold climate, as some sunscreens should not be exposed to prolonged high/low temps. If you do live in one of these areas, just bring it to the car per trip you make so it never gets overheated.

3. Keep sunscreen in your gym bag

If you’re a gym go-er, and it’s always a good idea to have your sunscreen ready to reapply after your workout before heading back outside. If you like to work out outdoors and carry a small belt bag or fanny pack, keep one in there. If your workout is longer than 1.5 hours, reapply while you’re out, or reapply if you’re sweating a lot.

4. Keep sunscreen at your desk at work

You might be wondering why you would need sunscreen in your office. Well, there are a couple of reasons. Your computer emits blue light and broad-spectrum sunscreen can block that. Additionally, you should be wearing sunscreen if your office has windows, or if you want to head outdoors at lunch. It’s also smart to reapply before leaving work, so you’re set for your commute home.

5. Keep sunscreen attached to your keys

If you’re someone who frequently forgets to apply sunscreen, hook it right on to your keys. You’ll see it when you go to grab them and remember to apply it before heading out the door. If you’re usually in a rush, try attaching a travel-sized bottle to your keychain so you can apply it while you walk out the door. Or opt for a quick mist option so you’re not eating up any extra time.

We all know SPF is the best and most effective way to protect your skin while out in the sun. There’s no doubt you should be applying and re-applying sunscreen throughout the day, but there are also a few other ways you can, and should, be protecting yourself if you’re serious about sun protection. Protecting your skin from the sun without sunscreen is important because prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen provides an extra layer of defense, but other measures like seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours are also crucial. Check out these methods that can be used in conjunction with SPF to ensure you’re protected:

1. Sunglasses

UV rays can damage your eyes which is why it’s important to wear sunglasses when doing anything out in the sun, especially driving. Sunglasses with UV protection can help shield your eyes and eyelids from harmful rays and help prevent things like cataracts. Redheads typically have fair skin and light eyes, which can make them more sensitive to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection helps shield their eyes from harmful UV rays and reduces the risk of sunburns on the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s an important precaution for maintaining eye health and preventing discomfort.

2. UV blocking sun sleeves for driving

If you spend a lot of time driving, you need UV-blocking sun sleeves. Your car window blocks out most of the UV rays but not 100%, and if you’re driving with the windows open, you’re fully at risk. UV sun sleeves slip on covering your arm from wrist to shoulder. They are lightweight and breathable but keep your arm protected.

3. Wide brim hats

Baseball caps might help to shield your eyes and forehead, but they leave your cheeks exposed. Wide-brim hats are the best way to protect your face, neck, and chest from UV rays. Keeping a wide-brim hat in your car is a good way to plan for a sunny day. It can also be thrown on should you not be able to re-apply your sunscreen. The best hats for sun protection are wide-brimmed hats, such as floppy hats, sun hats, or even certain styles of baseball caps with extended brims. These hats provide shade not only to your face but also to your neck and shoulders, helping to protect these areas from sunburn. Look for hats with a brim of at least 3 inches to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, hats made from UPF-rated fabrics offer an extra layer of protection against harmful UV rays.

4. UPF clothing

Covering up with clothing is a great way to protect your skin from the sun. Throw on some pants or a skirt after getting out of the pool, and add a shirt or shawl to protect your arms and legs. Wearing full-coverage clothing in the summer can get hot and some clothing lets UV light through. Opt instead for UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing that’s made to keep your skin protected.

UPF clothing works by blocking the majority of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Similar to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in sunscreen, UPF measures the effectiveness of fabric in protecting against UV radiation. UPF clothing is typically made from tightly woven fabrics, treated with UV-absorbing chemicals, or designed with special coatings to block or absorb UV rays. This helps reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin, providing an additional layer of protection against sunburns and skin damage.

5. Umbrella

When you’re out and about in the spring and summer months, you must have the option to get out of the sun and into some shade. There might not always be shade where you are, so bring your own. A small personal umbrella or parasol is great for shading yourself on a sunny day.

Protecting oneself from the sun’s harmful UV rays is crucial for maintaining skin and eye health. Sun exposure can lead to sunburns, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. By wearing sunscreen, hats, and UPF clothing, individuals can minimize the risk of skin damage and discomfort while enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, sunglasses with UV protection are essential for safeguarding eye health and reducing the risk of conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Consistent sun protection measures provide long-term benefits, especially for redheads with fair skin and light eyes, who may be more susceptible to sun damage. Overall, prioritizing sun protection is vital for preserving overall well-being and reducing the risk of sun-related health issues.

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week, we’re answering a question from Instagram that reads: “What are the best products for naturally curly red hair?” Did you know curly or wavy hair is actually super common amongst redheads? The prevalence of wavy or curly hair among redheads can be attributed to genetics. The gene responsible for red hair, MC1R, is also associated with variations in hair texture. Certain genetic factors may predispose individuals with red hair to have wavy or curly hair patterns. Additionally, red hair often has a different texture and thickness compared to other hair colors, which can contribute to its tendency to form waves or curls. This is we love helping our curly-haired redheads on their hair journey! Wondering what the essentials are and how to work with curly-haired products in your redhead hair routine for better, more beautiful curls?

Let’s start with the basics:

In-shower essentials

Most of your curly hair journey is going to take place in the shower and immediately afterward. You’ll want a nice hydrating shampoo and conditioner. One of our current favorites is the Kristin Ess Hair Curl Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner Set for Curly Hair Bounce + Shine, and of course the H2BAR Finally Glossy® Shampoo for some much-needed shine.

Finally Glossy Shampoo: $27

When applying your shampoo, it’s great to use a scalp massager to really get the roots. We recommend the Kitsch Hair Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush or the HEETA Scalp Massager Scalp Scrubber. After you’ve conditioned, it’s a good to detangle your red hair. We love the Tangle Teezer The Naturally Curly Ultimate Detangling Brush for redheads.

Post-shower essentials

Once you get out of the shower, it’s time to use products to shape those curls! It’s best to apply these products when your hair is really wet, so you get proper distribution and keep that hydration. Try using a mister bottle to keep your curly locks nice and wet during the process.

Apply a leave-in conditioner like the DevaCurl Leave-In Decadence® Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner to help hydrate the hair. The way you shape and add hold to your curls is entirely up to you, but we find that a curl cream, a mousse, and a gel make a pretty good trifecta for shape, volume, and hold. We recommend, OUAI Curl Cream, SheaMoisture Curl Mousse Coconut and Hibiscus and Kinky Curly Curl Custard Gel! If you want extra shape to your curls you can help define them with a Denman Curly Hair Brush.

Once you’ve applied your products and shaped your curls, it’s time to get rid of some of that moisture. Plop your hair in a the H2BAR Soft Microfiber Hair Towel and let it sit for anywhere from 10-45 minutes, depending on your preferences. If you prefer, you can use the towel to scrunch your hair and remove excess water only. Finish with an air dry, or use your diffuser blowdryer for quick drying time and reduced frizz.

Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads

Day-to-day tips and refresh essentials

Sometimes you need to refresh your curls before your next wash day, and a great way to do that is with a mister bottle. Getting your curls wet allows you to add more products into the hair without weighing down the curls too much. Damp hair is best. You can reuse your curl cream, or leave-in conditioner, or use a curl amplifier like the Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier and reshape some of the curls that have fallen flat.

Because redhead curls can be quite dry, this is a great time to apply a hair oil like the Olaplex Oil. You can also use a dry shampoo like Living Proof Dry Shampoo, or Amika Perk Up to help extend the life of your hair and reduce oils at the roots. This can also add volume back into your curls.

Last, but not least, it’s super important to keep your curls protected from damage, breakage, and frizz while you sleep. That’s why we love using a silk or satin pillowcase and/or a silk or satin hair bonnet. This will keep your hair nice and sleek and frizz-free!

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re talking about all the beautiful qualities you got from your mama. Mothers come in many forms. Some gave birth to us. Some adopted us. Some found us in a time of need and invited us into their lives.  We received a question from Instagram saying, “I’m a redhead, any other redheads get asked for their hair color so someone could match at the salon?” Red hair is one of the only colors that makes strangers stop and say, “Wait! What hair color is that?” Many assume natural red hair is dyed because it’s so unique, so rare and so beautiful. Aside from complimentary questions from strangers, redheads do get as asked the craziest things — like if people can touch their hair or even cut a small piece off to take to their stylist for color matching.

We wanted to break down the two quotes many mom’s say to their redhead kids:

  1. “Your red hair is so special! It has been in the family for generations!”
  2. “People pay really good money to color their hair red!”

Your DNA is special

First, let’s talk DNA, and how you got your hair from your mama (and your dad). Red hair is caused by a genetic mutation in the MC1R gene. This mutation affects the production of melanin, resulting in red hair, fair skin, and freckles. Red hair is unique and distinctive, adding to the diversity of human genetics.

Did you also know both biological parents have to carry the redhead gene for a child to be born with red hair? Red hair is recessive which is often why it skips a generation. It doesn’t always skip a generation, but it’s very common. Because red hair is recessive, and both parents need the redhead gene, the chances of having a redhead baby are on the lower side, unless you have a redhead parent.

For two non-redheads who carry the gene, the chance of having a red-haired baby is only 25%, while the chances for one redhead parent and one non-redhead (gene-carrying) parent is 50%. For two redheads, it’s almost a guarantee they will have a redhead baby!

Your path to self-acceptance is right where it needs to be

When you have a rare hair color, it’s common to want to dye your hair. Even more so if you don’t have redhead parents because it can feel like you don’t fit in with your family. Many natural redheads may choose to dye their hair another color for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s just for a change in appearance or to experiment with different looks. Other times, it could be because they feel self-conscious about their hair color, or they simply prefer a different aesthetic. It’s all about personal preference and individual style choices. Dyeing your red hair might seem like a good idea, but many redheads regret it, and can’t wait to find a way back to red.

Your mom might have warned you about dyeing your hair when you were younger — some parents even forbid their redhead kids from changing the color of their hair. This is because red hair is rare and although redheads get plenty of flack for it, it’s still coveted. But, going through a period of dyeing your red hair is common and just part of many redhead journeys. If you want to get your red hair back, unfortunately, the only way to do it well is to let it grow out over time. If you notice your hair isn’t as vibrant anymore, you can enhance your red with a gloss, glaze, or color-depositing product.

The message today is to embrace the gorgeous red hair your parents gave you, and thank your mom for passing on her redhead gene this Mother’s Day. If you’re a mom to redheads, help them embrace their hair young, so maybe their journey can be a little easier. And, if you’re stopped on the street by another stranger asking for your hair color, simply tell them it’s natural (or not) and you “got it from your mama!”

You can’t believe everything you hear or see online, but sometimes things can make you wonder. We recently came across a TikTok video talking about a supplement called “astaxanthin”. The video is by Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Barrett. In the video, Barrett goes on to talk about how this supplement could be a “natural tanner” and also a form of “internal sunblock”. Astaxanthin is simply a powerful antioxidant found in certain seafood and algae and has potential benefits such as a “natural sunblock” and may help to improve skin health. While some research suggests that it may provide some level of protection against UV radiation and help with skin health, it’s not a substitute for traditional sunblock or sunscreen. Redheads, who are often more susceptible to sunburn due to their fair skin, should continue to use sunscreen and take other sun protection measures.

But, let’s do some more digging to find out why some doctor’s, like Dr. Barrett, are recommending this supplement:

What is astaxanthin?

According to webmd.com, “Astaxanthin is a red pigment that belongs to a group of chemicals called carotenoids. It occurs in certain algae and causes the pink-red color in salmon.” Additionally, “astaxanthin is an antioxidant. This effect might protect cells from damage. Astaxanthin might also improve the way the immune system functions.”

Does it really “naturally tan”?

First, let’s discuss the idea of this supplement being a natural tanner. We’ve heard this before with things like carrots that are high in beta-carotene. While ingesting a large amount of carrots (or just taking a large amount of beta-carotene supplements) may impact the hue of your skin — at what cost? We know from the carrot tan trend that you would have to eat a ton of carrots to see any sort of change, and unless you have a Vitamin A deficiency, it’s not recommended. Similarly, you would need to take an abundance of astaxanthin to see any difference in your skin tone, and it may have an unhealthy impact on you in other ways.

According to Dr. Hartman, a board-certified dermatologist interviewed for an article by Allure back in January, taking astaxanthin, or other similar “darkening” supplements could actually put you at higher risk for skin cancer. Dr. Hartman explains that “astaxanthin really could make your skin darker, but not in a protective way like having melanin. If you have the pigment naturally, then you are [more] protected from skin cancer. This is giving you the fake version, and it’s making you more likely to develop melanoma.” For redheads, although your skin may appear darker when taking these supplements, you’re still at a very high risk of skin cancer. Supplements like astaxanthin, and lycopene (another supposed “natural tanner”) may interfere with other medications or even lead to stomach or liver issues.

Is it really a natural sunblock?

Now what about the idea that astaxanthin is an “internal sunblock”? This comes from the fact that it’s an antioxidant, which can help to reduce damage caused by UV rays. While this is beneficial for our bodies, and it’s good to have antioxidants in our diets, it’s not the same as wearing sunscreen. Everyone, especially redheads, should wear an SPF 30+ and re-apply every 2 hours, or as directed.

Remember, don’t take everything you hear online at face value, because while technically what Dr. Barrett is saying is not true, and it’s a lot more complicated. Redheads need a lot more information than provided in this short video:

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week we’re tackling a question we’ve received a couple of times. Can redheads wear white? Do redheads look good in white? Do redheads look better in black or white? Let’s talk about it! A common misconception is that redheads can’t (or shouldn’t) wear the color white. While, of course, redheads can technically wear anything, this idea comes from the fact that most redheads are fair-skinned. The idea that fair-skinned people shouldn’t wear white is silly. Redheads look amazing in white, and it can really make our red hair pop.

Redheads can wear white because it complements our unique hair color and creates a striking contrast that enhances our overall appearance. Additionally, white clothing can help to brighten a redhead’s complexion and make our natural features stand out. It’s all about finding the right shades and styles of white that work best for each individual redhead’s skin tone and personal style. Let’s talk about how redheads can rock white:

1. Know about the different shades of white and which looks best on you

The first thing to think about is “pure” white versus other shades of white. While very similar, different whites can look very different against our skin. Often, pure white will actually stand out better against a redhead’s skin, while shades of white like ivory and off-white may be closer to your skin tone and blend in more. That being said, redheads can rock either — it’s all about personal preference.

2. When in doubt, pair white with other colors

When styling a white piece of clothing, the colors you pair it with can make a big difference in how it looks. Of course, white is neutral, so it pairs well with every other color. The way you pair white is all about your preferences. Pairing white with other light colors will make you look more light and airy. Pairing white with darker colors will give you more of a contrast. You can also pair white with bright colors to help balance them out.

Here are some tips based on season:

1. Spring:

  • Pair a white blouse with pastel-colored bottoms like light pink or mint green.
  • Opt for floral print dresses with white as the base color.
  • Layer a white cardigan over a floral dress for cooler spring days.

2. Summer:

  • Wear a crisp white sundress with colorful accessories like a statement necklace or bold sandals.
  • Combine white shorts with a vibrant top like coral or turquoise.
  • Choose lightweight white fabrics like linen or cotton for breathability.

3. Autumn:

  • Pair white jeans with warm-toned sweaters such as rust or mustard.
  • Add a touch of fall with a plaid scarf or printed cardigan over a white blouse.
  • Incorporate white into layered outfits with earthy tones like olive green or burnt orange.

4. Winter:

  • Wear a white wool coat over dark-colored layers like a black turtleneck and charcoal pants.
  • Combine a white sweater with rich jewel-toned bottoms such as navy or burgundy.
  • Accessorize with metallic accents like silver or gold to add warmth to winter whites.

3. What to do when choosing between white + black

When choosing between these two neutrals, black often seems like the safer choice. Let’s think about how wearing a white top will look with your hair and skin versus a black top. A white top will reflect light, white light onto your face. For redheads with fair skin, this may help to brighten the face. Wearing a black top will reflect a darker light up onto the face, which may cause you to look more washed out. That doesn’t mean redheads can’t wear black, they absolutely can! It just means that you should try on that white top, you might be surprised how good it looks.

So, should redheads wear white?

Yes! Redheads should wear whatever they want, and whatever makes them comfortable. Our hair color is a huge part of our identity, but it doesn’t have to define everything we do. Wear white if you like it, and if you don’t there are tons of other light and neutral colors to choose from.

If you’re familiar with our Ask a Redhead series, you know we offer redhead advice and answer *your* redhead questions from social media each week. We’ve noticed a common theme popping up in our inboxes recently. Redheads are asking us, “How can I tan? Are tanning beds safe?”

This might be because Kim Kardashain went viral for normalizing her use of a tanning bed in her office. Encouraging the use of tanning beds is dangerous, and even more so for redheads who are at the highest risk of all. Most redheads can’t tan and will never be able to, but the ability to tan or burn isn’t solely determined by hair color but by various factors like skin type, melanin production, and sun exposure. Redheads typically have fair skin with less melanin, making them more prone to burning than tanning.

However, individual differences in skin type and genetics can lead to variations in tanning ability among redheads. Yes, there are some redheads who can tan. Redheads with slightly darker skin tones among redheads may have a better ability to tan compared to those with extremely fair skin. However, regardless of skin type, it’s important for all individuals to practice sun safety measures like using sunscreen and limiting sun exposure to prevent skin damage. UV tanning is not recommended for redheads (especially with fair skin) because they have less melanin, making them more susceptible to sunburns and an increased risk of skin cancer from UV exposure.

Redheads have a much higher likelihood of getting skin cancer than anyone else, and even small amounts of unprotected UV exposure can put you at risk. While there are ways to enjoy the outdoors with sunscreen and sun protection, the majority of redheads won’t get a tan when properly protected. Spending time outdoors — or in a UV bed — actively trying to get a tan is putting you at risk. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer, regardless of hair color. However, because redheads often have fair skin that is more susceptible to UV damage, they are at a higher risk of experiencing harmful effects from tanning beds, including sunburns, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Additionally, the lack of protective melanin in fair-skinned individuals can make them more vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation from tanning beds.

We never recommend outdoor or UV bed tanning to any redhead. For redheads who want to be tan, try a spray tan, or an at-home self-tanner. Spray tans or faux tans involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which reacts with the surface to produce a temporary tan appearance without the need for UV exposure. This eliminates the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer associated with UV tanning, making it a healthier option for those with fair skin, including redheads.

There are safe ways to get your glow on, but traditional tanning just isn’t one of them.

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week’s question comes from Instagram and reads, “What lipsticks should I use?” We also got some questions on redheads wearing red lipstick. Today, we’re talking all things lipstick. How to choose the right shade, what colors suit redheads best, plus some application tips to make your lipstick look amazing, and more.

1. How to choose the right shade

When it comes to choosing a lipstick shade, it can be overwhelming. There are so many options and you might wonder which color is best for you. Well, here’s a little secret: redheads can wear any color of lipstick they like. That’s right. There are no rules and you can rock whatever colors speak to you. That being said, we think every redhead should have three staple colors in their makeup collection: nude, pink, and red. With these three colors, you can match any makeup look or outfit and you’re set for any occasion. That’s why we created Finally Bold® in these three core colors. Not only did we pick formulas we know redheads will love, but we also customized the colors to be the perfect shade for redheads. The nude won’t wash you out, the pink isn’t too pink, and the red won’t compete with your hair.

2. The million dollar question: how can redheads wear a red lip?

Speaking of red lipstick, there are a lot of misconceptions that redheads shouldn’t wear red lipstick. We love a red lip and think redheads can rock it flawlessly. The biggest factor in loving your red lip is finding the perfect shade of red. Red lipstick comes in hundreds of shades, some are blue-toned, and some are orange-toned. Some red lipsticks are dark, while others border on pink or coral. We really love a true red for redheads, just like our new Finally Bold® in the shade ‘Perfectly Red’.

3. Know how to apply the lipstick

If you’re new to wearing lipstick, or just can’t seem to get the application right, we’re here to let you in on a few tricks we’ve learned over the years.

  • Lip liner is your friend. It helps you keep nice clean edges, prevents color bleed, and makes your look more polished.
  • Always blot your lipstick. Especially when wearing red lipstick, it’s important to remove excess to avoid transferring the lipstick to your teeth. Use a clean tissue or the finger trick to remove any excess.
  • Prep your lips before applying. Just like makeup, our lips need to be prepped and primed for flawless application. Exfoliating your lips and applying a light layer of chapstick 10-20 minutes before applying your lipstick is a great way to prime them.
  • Less is more when it comes to lipstick. Over-application can be messy and look unnatural. Try applying your lipstick gently starting in the center of the bottom lip. Work your way out using gentle pressure and sweeping motions. Avoid pressing too hard. If you like a more blotted look apply a little in the center and then using your lips or your finger, blur it outward.

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

A common topic we get questions about is how to gain more redhead confidence. We believe being a redhead is all about loving your red hair, being confident and helping the younger redhead community to embrace their red hair journey, too. Confidence is one of our favorite topics at How to be a Redhead — and a reason we have dedicated an entire section of our website to this — so let’s dive in!

If you ask any redhead on the street about their redhead experience, you’ll notice there’s one thing in common: it’s a journey. For some redheads, it’s an easy road and a no-brainer. For some, it’s harder. And for many redheads, it’s still a work in progress. We, unfortunately, live in a world where things that fall into the “other” category are often seen as negative. This may cause some young (and older) redheads to feel a need to try and fit in more. This often leads to redheads dyeing their hair, and even tanning their fair skin to try and be more like “everyone else” around them. If you’re trying to be something you aren’t, you often end up resenting the things that you are, which can lead to a lot of self-hatred for redheads.

What can we do about it? Being a redhead is unique and special and a beautiful thing, so how do we learn to embrace the things that make us different and build our redhead confidence? We’ve got some tips:

1. Find your place in the redhead community

Because red hair is so rare, and redheads can be born to non-redhead parents, it’s not uncommon for redheads to be the only ones in their family or friend group. This can feel isolating and lonely, so it’s important to find your place within the redhead community. Make redhead friends (even if it’s just online) who can relate to your experiences, and find a community that will build you up and show you how truly special being a redhead is. And, follow accounts like ours: @HowtobeaRedhead. Find inspiration in the variety of empowering content:

2. Embrace the unique

Instead of seeing your red hair as different or bad, start telling yourself how unique it is, how special it is, and how lucky you are to have this amazing hair that so few people have. You might have to fake it at first, but the more you tell yourself that, the more you’ll begin to believe it.

3. Learn how to complement your red hair

It’s hard to love your hair and your features if you don’t feel proud of them. Learning the colors and styles that complement your hair and skin can do wonders for your confidence. Check out our Redhead Can Wear Series.

4. Take pride in your red hair

The more pride you have in your red hair, the more confidence you will feel. Take pride in caring for your hair and treating it with the love it deserves. This will help your hair to look and feel better and give you more to be proud of.

5. Understand it’s a journey

As we’ve said, redhead confidence is a journey and you may have bad days or feel off, but like any form of self-love you just have to keep trying. Try a little each day and eventually, you’ll realize your mindset is changing.

Did you know November 5th is National Love Your Red Hair Day? It is a special holiday created by the co-founders of How to be a Redhead. Here at H2BAR, we love our red hair and we wanted a day for redheads everywhere to be acknowledged, appreciated, and celebrated.
