Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re talking about all the beautiful qualities you got from your mama. Mothers come in many forms. Some gave birth to us. Some adopted us. Some found us in a time of need and invited us into their lives.  We received a question from Instagram saying, “I’m a redhead, any other redheads get asked for their hair color so someone could match at the salon?” Red hair is one of the only colors that makes strangers stop and say, “Wait! What hair color is that?” Many assume natural red hair is dyed because it’s so unique, so rare and so beautiful. Aside from complimentary questions from strangers, redheads do get as asked the craziest things — like if people can touch their hair or even cut a small piece off to take to their stylist for color matching.

We wanted to break down the two quotes many mom’s say to their redhead kids:

  1. “Your red hair is so special! It has been in the family for generations!”
  2. “People pay really good money to color their hair red!”

Your DNA is special

First, let’s talk DNA, and how you got your hair from your mama (and your dad). Red hair is caused by a genetic mutation in the MC1R gene. This mutation affects the production of melanin, resulting in red hair, fair skin, and freckles. Red hair is unique and distinctive, adding to the diversity of human genetics.

Did you also know both biological parents have to carry the redhead gene for a child to be born with red hair? Red hair is recessive which is often why it skips a generation. It doesn’t always skip a generation, but it’s very common. Because red hair is recessive, and both parents need the redhead gene, the chances of having a redhead baby are on the lower side, unless you have a redhead parent.

For two non-redheads who carry the gene, the chance of having a red-haired baby is only 25%, while the chances for one redhead parent and one non-redhead (gene-carrying) parent is 50%. For two redheads, it’s almost a guarantee they will have a redhead baby!

Your path to self-acceptance is right where it needs to be

When you have a rare hair color, it’s common to want to dye your hair. Even more so if you don’t have redhead parents because it can feel like you don’t fit in with your family. Many natural redheads may choose to dye their hair another color for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s just for a change in appearance or to experiment with different looks. Other times, it could be because they feel self-conscious about their hair color, or they simply prefer a different aesthetic. It’s all about personal preference and individual style choices. Dyeing your red hair might seem like a good idea, but many redheads regret it, and can’t wait to find a way back to red.

Your mom might have warned you about dyeing your hair when you were younger — some parents even forbid their redhead kids from changing the color of their hair. This is because red hair is rare and although redheads get plenty of flack for it, it’s still coveted. But, going through a period of dyeing your red hair is common and just part of many redhead journeys. If you want to get your red hair back, unfortunately, the only way to do it well is to let it grow out over time. If you notice your hair isn’t as vibrant anymore, you can enhance your red with a gloss, glaze, or color-depositing product.

The message today is to embrace the gorgeous red hair your parents gave you, and thank your mom for passing on her redhead gene this Mother’s Day. If you’re a mom to redheads, help them embrace their hair young, so maybe their journey can be a little easier. And, if you’re stopped on the street by another stranger asking for your hair color, simply tell them it’s natural (or not) and you “got it from your mama!”

Women’s Health Week is May 12th through May 15th. Women’s health differs greatly from men’s health, and in many countries, including the United States, there’s less education and more misinformation on women’s health. Being healthy isn’t just about how much you weigh, or how much you work out. Your health plays a huge role in your well-being and it’s important to stay healthy. In honor of Women’s Health Week, here are 6 healthy redhead-focused habits you should be doing. If you’re already doing all these things, awesome! We’re so proud of you. If you’re not, this is a gentle reminder to make a call and set up that appointment because your health matters. Take your time and do one task at a time. We’re still proud of you!

Here are some reminders to keep yourself healthy:

Have a physical

If you haven’t been to the doctor in a while, book a physical with your primary care provider. Or if you haven’t established a primary care provider, do that! You need someone you can see annually or when any general concerns arise. Getting a physical gives you a baseline for where your health is at. Then if there are any issues you can work with them to find a specialist for further care.

Visit the dentist

Tooth health is so important and bad teeth can lead to many other issues in your body. The dentist is something a lot of redheads have a fear of, but it’s important to go at least once per year. Get a cleaning and have your teeth checked, and be sure to stay on top of your brushing and flossing at home. Want some inspo? Check out Season 5, Ep 15when our co-founder’s talk to redhead dentist, Dr. Ethan Erwin:

See your gynecologist

For women specifically, it’s important to have a gynecologist you trust. Seeing the gynecologist is a very personal and private matter and you want to feel comfortable. Your gynecologist isn’t just there to give you your dreaded pap smear. They can also help you with family planning, breast exams, and other women’s wellness exams. Often, a woman’s gynecologist is the first to notice a health concern including things like high blood pressure and thyroid issues.

Go to the dermatologist

Skin health is important for everyone, but especially redheads. With an increased risk of skin cancer, it’s always a good idea to have a dermatologist you trust and can visit whenever you have a concern. You can get an annual skin check-up to make sure there are no issues, and of course, talk to them about any skin questions you have regarding your face or body.

Visit your eye doctor

For redheads who wear glasses or contacts, visiting the eye doctor regularly is a no-brainer, but for redheads who have good vision, you might not think twice. Even if you don’t think you need some sort of vision correction, it’s good to visit the eye doctor every few years to confirm your eyes are still doing well. Doing so can help detect early indications of ocular diseases.

Seek out mental health help

Women deal with a lot, and it’s good to have someone to talk to. Speaking with a licensed mental health counselor or therapist can help to ease some of that burden. Mental health help isn’t just for those who are depressed, it’s a way to keep your mind as healthy as your body. Seeking mental health help is a personal choice and also one that may not be in the budget for some people. If you feel you need mental health help — even if you just feel stressed or moody — please consult your options. You may be able to find free or low-cost help, or have coverage through your insurance you’re unaware of.

Parents of redhead kids contact us daily for advice and tips. Recently, we received an inquiry as to why it was so hard to find redhead dolls for their little redhead ones. It’s pretty well known that many stores do not carry redhead dolls, with the exception of specific redhead character dolls. As unfortunate as this is, we’re lucky to live in an age where we don’t have to settle for what the store has — we can decide to hop online and see what is really out there. We did our own searches and found 30+ redhead dolls online, ranging from plush dolls to more fashion-style dolls.

We also found that American Girl sells about a dozen redhead dolls in different styles, and has a One of a Kind Doll program where you can design a doll to look like anyone. This feature includes a redhead option and we are loving it.

Redhead dolls are so hard to find because there’s less demand for them — with less than 2% of the population having red hair. The only way to get more redhead dolls is to show toy makers that there’s a need and want. So, if you have a little one, redhead or not, get them a redhead doll! For those kids with red hair it’s a great way to have a doll that looks like you, and for non-redhead kids, it’s a great way to diversify their doll collection to look more like the world around them.

Plush Dolls

A plush doll is a soft toy usually made from fabric, often resembling animals, characters from movies, cartoons, or even humans. They are often stuffed with cotton or similar materials to make them cuddly and huggable.

When we talk about the redhead experience, it’s more than just having red hair. Yes, our redhead experience comes from the color of our hair, but non-redheads probably do not realize how much of an impact our hair color has on our lives, and what types of experiences we have out in the world. Have you ever wondered what common experiences and conversations are unique to redheads? We’re here to tell you:

1. Being Teased or Bullied for Our Hair Color

Almost any redhead you ask has a story about being teased or bullied for their hair color. For most redheads, it’s something that happens in childhood, but it’s known to happen to adults too.

2. The Journey to Loving Your Red Hair

With all the teasing, often comes some self-loathing. Even if a redhead isn’t directly impacted by the stigmas of red hair, it’s felt in society. That’s why so many redheads have a journey to loving their red hair. For some it’s easy, and for others, it’s a lifelong struggle — this is something many other hair colors do not experience.

3. Talking About Sun Safety / Skin Cancer

Everyone should be concerned with sun safety and preventing skin cancer, but for redheads, it’s a much more pressing topic. Redheads are far more likely to develop skin cancer than those without red hair, which means that from a young age, we have to take our sun protection very seriously. Thankfully, young redheads live in a world where wearing sunscreen is cool, but for adult redheads who grew up in a different time, it wasn’t always that way.

4. Correcting Misconceptions About Redheads

Most non-redheads seem to have some preconceived notions or misconceptions about redheads and of course, it becomes our job to correct them.

Some misconceptions about redheads include:

1. Hot temper: While there’s a stereotype that redheads have fiery tempers, temperament is individual and not determined by hair color.

2. Frequent hair color changes: Contrary to popular belief, many redheads have naturally vibrant hair and don’t need to dye it often.

3. Rareness: While red hair is less common globally, it’s not as rare as some may think. It occurs in around 1-2% of the world’s population.

4. Sun sensitivity: While redheads may have a higher risk of sunburn due to their fair skin, not all experience extreme photosensitivity or photophobia.

5. Personality traits: Just like people of any other hair color, redheads are diverse in personality traits and shouldn’t be stereotyped based on their hair color alone.

5. Having to Explain Where Your Hair Color Comes From

People always want an explanation of where you got your red hair. They want a full family tree breakdown, or to know your lineage. For some redheads, it’s easy to pinpoint, but for others all they know is the gene must be present. People also don’t usually know how red hair comes about, so that’s another thing we have to explain.

6. Struggling to Find Makeup

For redheads who wear makeup, it’s a pretty universal experience of not being able to find the right shade foundation, scrolling endlessly through photos trying to find someone who looks remotely like you to see what shade they’re wearing in a certain lipstick or blush. We hope that the H2BAR brow, mascara, and lip products can help ease this trouble for redheads, but we know it’s still a very real experience.

7. Not Understanding Your Skin

Redheads usually have sensitive skin, which may lead to skin conditions or reactions. Unless you have other redheads in your life, you may not know what to watch out for. Not understanding your skin can be confusing. Most of the time a dermatologist can help you out, but we know there are some out there not educated in redhead skin who might leave you with more questions than answers.

Redheads are rare and this can make us the focal point of any room we walk in, but the attention doesn’t stop with people. We have been hearing a rumor in the redhead community that hummingbirds seem to be attracted to redheads more than blondes and brunettes. At first we thought this was because bees are attracted to redheads, but there is more to it than that. Here’s everything we know:

Hummingbirds see more colors than humans do

Human eyes are made up of three types of color cones which allow us to see all the colors of the rainbow as we know it. Hummingbirds have four types of color cones allowing them to see an even wider array of colors than we ever could. According to Audubon.org, “hummingbirds’ sense of color is due to the dense concentration of cones in its retina. The cones themselves contain pigments and oil droplets in shades of yellow to red, which seem to act like filters. The filters appear to heighten color sensitivity in the red to yellow range while muting colors such as blue.” Since reds and yellows are more vibrant for hummingbirds, it makes sense that they would prefer those colors over duller cool tones. However, this isn’t the only reason hummingbirds may prefer the color red.

Red symbolizes food + nectar

Like most animals, hummingbirds don’t really play favorites. Instead, they are looking for their food, specifically nectar. Many red flowers are high in nectar, which means where there’s red, there’s probably something to eat. The same goes for hummingbird feeders, which are almost always red. Hummingbirds also gravitate towards nectar-filled flowers that are orange, yellow, purple and pink.

This is why hummingbirds are attracted to us

The belief that hummingbirds are attracted to redheads likely stems from the vibrant red hair color catching their attention, similar to how they are drawn to red flowers due to their color sensitivity and association with nectar. While there isn’t conclusive scientific evidence specifically linking hummingbirds to redheads, the notion is understandable given hummingbirds’ affinity for bright colors and their keen ability to perceive a wide range of hues. Additionally, redheads may emit subtle scents or have a sweet taste on their skin that could further pique the interest of these curious birds, potentially contributing to the perception of an attraction between redheads and hummingbirds. Overall, while the idea remains anecdotal within the redhead community, it reflects the fascinating interactions between humans and nature’s vibrant inhabitants.

There are a lot of stereotypes surrounding hair color — we wrote about 8 of them specifically for redheads a few years ago. For other hair colors, blondes are perceived as being dumb, but fun. Brunettes are usually perceived as being smarter, but more boring. Redheads may experience more stereotypes than any other hair color. The way redheads are seen by society has a lot to do with pop culture, but also with history and the way redheads have been treated throughout the years. Here are 9 stereotypes that seem to be pretty universal for redheads:

1. Redheads have feisty or fiery personalities

We’re not sure where this stereotype came from, but it’s simply not true. Many redheads are meek or shy, and some may have big personalities, but it has nothing to do with our hair color. The stereotype of redheads being feisty or fiery likely originated from cultural associations with the color red, which is often associated with intensity, passion, and strong emotions. Additionally, red hair is relatively rare, making it stand out and potentially leading to the development of stereotypes. These stereotypes are not based on any scientific evidence and vary widely in accuracy.

2. Having red hair means you have a short temper

Going along with the personality stereotype, lots of people think that red hair = a short temper or easily angered. This may be because the color red is associated with things like anger and danger, but redheads have all sorts of tempers just like other hair colors. We might get a little annoyed if you keep stereotyping us, though!

3. Awkward vs promiscuous

There are two separate stereotypes for redhead men and redhead women. Usually, redhead men are seen as being awkward or nerdy, while redhead women are seen as being highly promiscuous or sexual. These perceptions likely stem from societal stereotypes and cultural portrayals rather than any inherent traits of redheads. Stereotypes about redhead men being awkward or nerdy may be influenced by portrayals in media and popular culture, while stereotypes about redhead women being promiscuous may derive from historical associations of red hair with sensuality or from media representations. It’s important to recognize that these stereotypes are not based on facts and vary widely in accuracy.

4. All redheads have freckles

Most people think that all redheads have freckles. While it’s true a large majority do, there are tons of redheads without. Just like there are tons of people with blonde or brunette hair, who have freckles. The redhead gene and the freckle gene are not one.

5. Redheads have no soul

This one you’ve probably heard a million times, and we blame pop culture… partially. History is also to blame because throughout history redheads were seen as witches, and even vampires. It’s long been believed that having red hair made someone something other than human, or human as we know it. Which simply isn’t true!

6. Redheads come from Irish decent

A common misconception and stereotype is that all redheads have some sort of Irish descent. While Ireland does have one of the most redhead-dense populations, redheads can come from anywhere in the world!

7. Redheads can’t go in the sun & always sunburn

The stereotype that redheads cannot go in the sun is false, we can go in the sun but we choose not to. Redheads are at a much higher risk of skin cancer, and avoiding sun is the best way to keep our skin safe. Most redheads do sunburn easily, but not all. Some redheads can even get a tan! Although it’s still putting them at risk for skin cancer.

8. All redheads are related

Ever been out in public with a friend and seen a redhead stranger and been asked if you know them, or have strangers assume you’re related to any redhead they see? Yeah, that’s common. Because redheads are rare, people don’t see too many and automatically assume we all come from the same family.

9. Redheads always have redhead babies

Most people assume that if you have red hair your kids will too. Most redheads get told how cute their redhead babies will be. The truth is, you’re not guaranteed a redhead baby unless you have a child with another redhead. A baby can only have red hair if both parents carry the gene, even if it’s recessive.

If you’re familiar with our Ask a Redhead series, you know we offer redhead advice and answer *your* redhead questions from social media each week. We’ve noticed a common theme popping up in our inboxes recently. Redheads are asking us, “How can I tan? Are tanning beds safe?”

This might be because Kim Kardashain went viral for normalizing her use of a tanning bed in her office. Encouraging the use of tanning beds is dangerous, and even more so for redheads who are at the highest risk of all. Most redheads can’t tan and will never be able to, but the ability to tan or burn isn’t solely determined by hair color but by various factors like skin type, melanin production, and sun exposure. Redheads typically have fair skin with less melanin, making them more prone to burning than tanning.

However, individual differences in skin type and genetics can lead to variations in tanning ability among redheads. Yes, there are some redheads who can tan. Redheads with slightly darker skin tones among redheads may have a better ability to tan compared to those with extremely fair skin. However, regardless of skin type, it’s important for all individuals to practice sun safety measures like using sunscreen and limiting sun exposure to prevent skin damage. UV tanning is not recommended for redheads (especially with fair skin) because they have less melanin, making them more susceptible to sunburns and an increased risk of skin cancer from UV exposure.

Redheads have a much higher likelihood of getting skin cancer than anyone else, and even small amounts of unprotected UV exposure can put you at risk. While there are ways to enjoy the outdoors with sunscreen and sun protection, the majority of redheads won’t get a tan when properly protected. Spending time outdoors — or in a UV bed — actively trying to get a tan is putting you at risk. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer, regardless of hair color. However, because redheads often have fair skin that is more susceptible to UV damage, they are at a higher risk of experiencing harmful effects from tanning beds, including sunburns, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Additionally, the lack of protective melanin in fair-skinned individuals can make them more vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation from tanning beds.

We never recommend outdoor or UV bed tanning to any redhead. For redheads who want to be tan, try a spray tan, or an at-home self-tanner. Spray tans or faux tans involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which reacts with the surface to produce a temporary tan appearance without the need for UV exposure. This eliminates the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer associated with UV tanning, making it a healthier option for those with fair skin, including redheads.

There are safe ways to get your glow on, but traditional tanning just isn’t one of them.

You’ve just been through a bad breakup, or maybe you got ghosted by someone you were into. A coping mechanism as old as hair dye itself is to alter your look as a crucial part of the healing process. He always loved you as a blonde? Well, you’re going red. Looks like it’s time to turn over a new leaf.

You might be tempted to get those “trauma bangs”, but we’ve been on the internet long enough to know that women go way more drastic than a bang cut. People often make changes to their appearance during a breakup as a way to reclaim their identity or signify a fresh start. Red hair may symbolize passion, transformation, or simply a desire for something new and bold. It can be a form of self-expression and empowerment during a challenging time. Changing hair color, especially to something as vibrant as red, can also be a way to boost confidence and feel more in control during a period of emotional upheaval. It’s like saying, “I’m taking charge of my life and embracing change.” Additionally, red is often associated with vitality and energy, so dyeing one’s hair red could be a way to inject some excitement and positivity into a challenging situation.

Dyeing hair red after a breakup is a step women can take to feel like a new woman after being let down. This is portrayed perfectly by comedy influencer, @yoleendadong on Instagram.

Comments on the video prove that this is a common female experience, and say things like:

  • “As you can see, he didn’t text back”
  • “Staring in red hair and self cut bangs 👁👄👁
  • “Welp my pic should tell how my story went…🫠
  • 😂 I feel attacked 😂
  • “We’re all living the same life 😂😂😂😂
  • “I actually dyed my hair red and BLOCKED HIM🤤😂
  • 🥲 now everyone knows why my hair’s red”
  • “Watching this with red hair rn..”

If you’re a non-redhead going through something and ready to join the redhead community, welcome. We’re so happy to have you. Being a redhead is awesome and we think you’ll like it.

And natural redheads going through something, put down the scissors and the dye!

Rock it like a Redhead!
