No matter if you’re ‘by choice’ or natural, maintaining dyed red hair is something to educate yourself on and stay committed to. Luckily, there are a few tips on how to keep faux red hair from fading while keeping it looking shiny and vibrant:
1. Let the color set
The worst thing you can do is make your fresh red color fade right after getting it colored. Wait a few days to wash your hair after leaving the salon. This will allow the color to really soak in and will provide you with long-lasting red locks.
2. Less shampooing with a color-safe shampoo
The more you wash your hair, the more the color will fade. Try going longer between washes and try not to over-shampoo your locks. When you do wash your hair, make sure you use a color-safe shampoo to help prevent fading.
3. Wash with cold water
Another tip is to wash with cold or cool water. Hot water can make the color fade, so using cooler water will help to reduce that risk.
4. Use a color-depositing product
When the red starts to fade, but you’re not ready for another trip to the salon, touch it up with a color-depositing product like a color-depositing shampoo. This will help add vibrancy to the color and keep it looking bright right in the comfort of your own shower.
5. Become BFFs with your hair colorist
Realistically, faux red hair just needs more maintenance than other colors, so the best way to keep it looking fresh is to pre-book appointments with your stylist. Keep on a tight schedule of touch-ups while doing the above and you’re on track for gorgeous red hair.
