The year is almost halfway over and we’re just getting into prime sunscreen season. Memorial Day marks the start of summer and as redheads, we’re always happy “Don’t Fry Day” is held the Friday before this American holiday each year. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the dangers of overexposure to the sun and to promote sun safety measures, such as wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sun hours. It’s a reminder to protect your skin from harmful UV rays to prevent skin cancer and premature aging. We thought this was the perfect opportunity to share our top redhead-approved sunscreen contenders for 2024. You’re probably familiar with some of these brands and products because we simply won’t stop talking about them. If you’re in the market for a new sunscreen for this summer, give one of these a try:

5. Blue Lizard

Another brand that has a big focus on sensitive skin is Blue Lizard. Their mineral sunscreens are reef-safe and a great alternative to chemical sunscreens.

We all know SPF is the best and most effective way to protect your skin while out in the sun. There’s no doubt you should be applying and re-applying sunscreen throughout the day, but there are also a few other ways you can, and should, be protecting yourself if you’re serious about sun protection. Protecting your skin from the sun without sunscreen is important because prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen provides an extra layer of defense, but other measures like seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours are also crucial. Check out these methods that can be used in conjunction with SPF to ensure you’re protected:

1. Sunglasses

UV rays can damage your eyes which is why it’s important to wear sunglasses when doing anything out in the sun, especially driving. Sunglasses with UV protection can help shield your eyes and eyelids from harmful rays and help prevent things like cataracts. Redheads typically have fair skin and light eyes, which can make them more sensitive to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection helps shield their eyes from harmful UV rays and reduces the risk of sunburns on the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s an important precaution for maintaining eye health and preventing discomfort.

2. UV blocking sun sleeves for driving

If you spend a lot of time driving, you need UV-blocking sun sleeves. Your car window blocks out most of the UV rays but not 100%, and if you’re driving with the windows open, you’re fully at risk. UV sun sleeves slip on covering your arm from wrist to shoulder. They are lightweight and breathable but keep your arm protected.

3. Wide brim hats

Baseball caps might help to shield your eyes and forehead, but they leave your cheeks exposed. Wide-brim hats are the best way to protect your face, neck, and chest from UV rays. Keeping a wide-brim hat in your car is a good way to plan for a sunny day. It can also be thrown on should you not be able to re-apply your sunscreen. The best hats for sun protection are wide-brimmed hats, such as floppy hats, sun hats, or even certain styles of baseball caps with extended brims. These hats provide shade not only to your face but also to your neck and shoulders, helping to protect these areas from sunburn. Look for hats with a brim of at least 3 inches to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, hats made from UPF-rated fabrics offer an extra layer of protection against harmful UV rays.

4. UPF clothing

Covering up with clothing is a great way to protect your skin from the sun. Throw on some pants or a skirt after getting out of the pool, and add a shirt or shawl to protect your arms and legs. Wearing full-coverage clothing in the summer can get hot and some clothing lets UV light through. Opt instead for UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing that’s made to keep your skin protected.

UPF clothing works by blocking the majority of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Similar to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in sunscreen, UPF measures the effectiveness of fabric in protecting against UV radiation. UPF clothing is typically made from tightly woven fabrics, treated with UV-absorbing chemicals, or designed with special coatings to block or absorb UV rays. This helps reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin, providing an additional layer of protection against sunburns and skin damage.

5. Umbrella

When you’re out and about in the spring and summer months, you must have the option to get out of the sun and into some shade. There might not always be shade where you are, so bring your own. A small personal umbrella or parasol is great for shading yourself on a sunny day.

Protecting oneself from the sun’s harmful UV rays is crucial for maintaining skin and eye health. Sun exposure can lead to sunburns, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. By wearing sunscreen, hats, and UPF clothing, individuals can minimize the risk of skin damage and discomfort while enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, sunglasses with UV protection are essential for safeguarding eye health and reducing the risk of conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Consistent sun protection measures provide long-term benefits, especially for redheads with fair skin and light eyes, who may be more susceptible to sun damage. Overall, prioritizing sun protection is vital for preserving overall well-being and reducing the risk of sun-related health issues.

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week, we’re answering a question from Instagram that reads: “What are the best products for naturally curly red hair?” Did you know curly or wavy hair is actually super common amongst redheads? The prevalence of wavy or curly hair among redheads can be attributed to genetics. The gene responsible for red hair, MC1R, is also associated with variations in hair texture. Certain genetic factors may predispose individuals with red hair to have wavy or curly hair patterns. Additionally, red hair often has a different texture and thickness compared to other hair colors, which can contribute to its tendency to form waves or curls. This is we love helping our curly-haired redheads on their hair journey! Wondering what the essentials are and how to work with curly-haired products in your redhead hair routine for better, more beautiful curls?

Let’s start with the basics:

In-shower essentials

Most of your curly hair journey is going to take place in the shower and immediately afterward. You’ll want a nice hydrating shampoo and conditioner. One of our current favorites is the Kristin Ess Hair Curl Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner Set for Curly Hair Bounce + Shine, and of course the H2BAR Finally Glossy® Shampoo for some much-needed shine.

Finally Glossy Shampoo: $27

When applying your shampoo, it’s great to use a scalp massager to really get the roots. We recommend the Kitsch Hair Scalp Massager Shampoo Brush or the HEETA Scalp Massager Scalp Scrubber. After you’ve conditioned, it’s a good to detangle your red hair. We love the Tangle Teezer The Naturally Curly Ultimate Detangling Brush for redheads.

Post-shower essentials

Once you get out of the shower, it’s time to use products to shape those curls! It’s best to apply these products when your hair is really wet, so you get proper distribution and keep that hydration. Try using a mister bottle to keep your curly locks nice and wet during the process.

Apply a leave-in conditioner like the DevaCurl Leave-In Decadence® Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner to help hydrate the hair. The way you shape and add hold to your curls is entirely up to you, but we find that a curl cream, a mousse, and a gel make a pretty good trifecta for shape, volume, and hold. We recommend, OUAI Curl Cream, SheaMoisture Curl Mousse Coconut and Hibiscus and Kinky Curly Curl Custard Gel! If you want extra shape to your curls you can help define them with a Denman Curly Hair Brush.

Once you’ve applied your products and shaped your curls, it’s time to get rid of some of that moisture. Plop your hair in a the H2BAR Soft Microfiber Hair Towel and let it sit for anywhere from 10-45 minutes, depending on your preferences. If you prefer, you can use the towel to scrunch your hair and remove excess water only. Finish with an air dry, or use your diffuser blowdryer for quick drying time and reduced frizz.

Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads

Day-to-day tips and refresh essentials

Sometimes you need to refresh your curls before your next wash day, and a great way to do that is with a mister bottle. Getting your curls wet allows you to add more products into the hair without weighing down the curls too much. Damp hair is best. You can reuse your curl cream, or leave-in conditioner, or use a curl amplifier like the Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier and reshape some of the curls that have fallen flat.

Because redhead curls can be quite dry, this is a great time to apply a hair oil like the Olaplex Oil. You can also use a dry shampoo like Living Proof Dry Shampoo, or Amika Perk Up to help extend the life of your hair and reduce oils at the roots. This can also add volume back into your curls.

Last, but not least, it’s super important to keep your curls protected from damage, breakage, and frizz while you sleep. That’s why we love using a silk or satin pillowcase and/or a silk or satin hair bonnet. This will keep your hair nice and sleek and frizz-free!

It is pretty common for redheads to have wavy or curly hair. While not all textured hair is curly, curly hair falls under the textured hair category. Textured hair encompasses a wide range of hair types, including curly, wavy, coily, and kinky hair. When you have these hair types, it can take certain cuts and styles to bring out the curl pattern for the ultimate style. For redhead men with curly or wavy hair, learning how to manage your curls and finding a style you like can be a process. Looking for some inspo? We’ve got you covered, plus we’re giving you a few styling tips to make embracing your red curls even easier:

4 styling tips for redhead men with curly hair:

Tip 1: Wet Your Hair

Water is a curly-haired redhead’s best friend. Water helps to reshape and reset your curls. For redhead men with short hair, it’s easy to spritz on some water, do a quick re-set, and let it dry. For redhead men with longer hair, it’s a little more of a process when it comes to drying, but water is still a great tool.

Tip 2: Don’t Be Afraid of Product

Lots of men are put off by having to use products in their hair. If you want well-formed, healthy-looking curls you have to add a little product. Gels, mousses, and curl creams are all great beginner options. For curly red hair, here are some product recommendations tailored to enhance and maintain your curls:

  • Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner: Look for sulfate-free, moisturizing formulas to keep your hair hydrated without stripping away natural oils. Brands like SheaMoisture and DevaCurl offer great options for curly hair.
  • Leave-In Conditioner: Opt for a leave-in conditioner that provides moisture and helps define curls. Kinky-Curly Knot Today and Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner are popular choices.
  • Curl Enhancing Cream or Gel: These products help define curls and control frizz. Look for creams or gels specifically formulated for curly hair. SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream are highly recommended.
  • Hair Oil: A lightweight hair oil can add extra moisture and shine to your curls. Argan oil or jojoba oil are great options. Just be sure to use sparingly, especially if your hair tends to get greasy easily.
  • Deep Conditioning Treatment: Incorporate a deep conditioning treatment into your routine once a week or as needed to keep your curls healthy and hydrated. Try treatments like Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 or Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask.
  • Diffuser Attachment for Hair Dryer: To dry your hair without causing frizz, use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer. This helps distribute heat evenly and encourages natural curl formation.
  • Refresh Spray: A refresh spray can help revive curls on non-wash days. Look for a spray that moisturizes and adds bounce to curls without weighing them down.

Remember to adjust your product usage based on your hair’s unique needs and preferences. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for you.

Tip 3: Get a Curly Cut

Curly haircuts are often brought up for long hair that can get weighed down, but shorter cuts can be customized for curls too. The best way to do this is to go to a barber or stylist who knows curly hair. They will make sure the cut looks good both wet and dry.

Tip 4: Get a Wide-tooth Comb

Brushing curly hair while dry is a no-no, and most men with shorter hair don’t really need to brush it anyways. Having curly hair might mean more tangles, so using a wide-tooth comb can help untangle hair, and reshape your style while keeping your curls intact.

Seek Inspo on TikTok: Here are 5 Inspo Videos for Your Next Curly Haircut

Style 1: Longer on Top + Shaved Sides

If you want to keep some of the volume of your curls but don’t want an overall shaggy look this is perfect. The short tapered sides will look sleek, while your curls pop on top.

Style 2: Tapered Cut

Similar to the last cut, this cut has more length on top, but it tapers down onto the neck. There are no shaved sides which gives more volume all over. This style of cut can be kept a little longer, or cleaned up to be closer to the head.

Redheads have a lot in common, and when it comes to our hair, the similarities don’t stop at the color. Most redheads have hair that is quite thick and we get asked often why this is. You might think it’s a coincidence that most redheads have thick hair, but there’s an actual science behind it. Here’s everything we know about why redheads have thicker hair than blondes or brunettes.

It’s about the thickness of the strands

Your first instinct might be to assume that redheads have more hair than blondes or brunettes, but it’s the opposite. Blondes average about 150,000 strands of hair on their heads, while brunettes average around 110,000. Redheads average only 90,000 strands of hair. If redheads physically have less hair, how is our hair thicker overall? It’s because redheads have thicker hair strands, even if they have less of them.

Here’s the thing about red hair strands, a general rule of thumb is that the lighter the hair color, the thinner the hair strands. That’s why a lot of natural blondes have thin or fine hair. The darker the hair is, the thicker the hair strands. This is why many people with dark brown or black hair have more coarse hair. According to Modena Hair Institute, “This is believed to be due to the amount of melanin in the hair. The more melanin, the darker the hair, and the thicker the strand. Less melanin means lighter hair and a finer strand.” We know that red hair is caused by eumelanin, which redheads have a lot of. So it’s believed that this is why redheads’ hair strands are thicker.

We have thicker hair follicles

We have thicker strands and thicker follicles. Redheads also (often) have thicker hair because they typically have more hair follicles than people with other hair colors. These extra follicles contribute to the appearance of thicker hair. Additionally, red hair tends to have a thicker shaft compared to other hair colors, adding to the overall thickness.

How to keep hair healthy + thick

So now we know why redheads have thick hair, but there are some downsides. This also means that redheads are more prone to noticeable hair loss. Because we have fewer strands, it’s more noticeable when they start to fall out. This is usually an issue for redhead men. We are also more prone to frizz and coarse hair. Want some thick hair tips? Here are some tips for redheads:

1. Hydration is Key: Keep your hair well-moisturized with hydrating shampoos and conditioners to prevent frizz and maintain shine.

2. Color Protection: Use color-safe products specifically designed for red hair to preserve its vibrancy and prevent fading.

3. Heat Protection: Limit the use of heat styling tools, or use a heat protectant spray before styling to minimize damage and maintain the integrity of your hair.

4. Trim Regularly: Regular trims help prevent split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and full.

5. Opt for Red-Friendly Styles: Consider hairstyles and cuts that complement your red hair, such as layers or long waves, to enhance its natural beauty.

6. Accessorize: Experiment with hair accessories like headbands, clips, or scarves to add flair to your red locks.

7. Nutrition: Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to promote hair health from the inside out.

8. Consult a Professional: If you’re considering a major change, consult with a professional hairstylist who specializes in red hair to ensure you achieve the look you desire without damaging your locks.

9. Gentle Cleansing: Avoid over-washing your hair, as this can strip away natural oils and cause dryness. Opt for a gentle shampoo and consider washing your hair every other day or as needed.

10. Deep Conditioning Treatments: Treat your hair to regular deep conditioning treatments to replenish moisture and keep it soft and manageable.

11. Protect from the Sun: UV rays can cause color fading and damage to your hair. Protect your locks by wearing hats or using hair products with UV protection when spending time outdoors.

12. Cold Water Rinse: Finish your shower with a rinse of cold water to help seal the hair cuticles and lock in moisture, leaving your hair smoother and shinier.

13. Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Minimize exposure to harsh chemicals found in hair dyes, bleach, and other styling products that can weaken and damage your hair over time.

14. Use a Wide-Tooth Comb: After washing, gently detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb to prevent breakage and minimize stress on your strands.

15. Sleep on Silk: Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent frizz while you sleep, helping your hair retain its smoothness and style.

16. Regular Scalp Massages: Stimulate blood flow to your scalp with regular massages to promote healthy hair growth and maintain scalp health.

17. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your hair hydrated from the inside out, which can contribute to overall hair health and shine.

18. Protective Hairstyles: When engaging in activities that may cause hair damage (such as swimming or intense workouts), consider wearing protective hairstyles like braids or buns to minimize exposure to environmental stressors.

Finally Bold® redhead lipsticks dropped on May 10th and we’re so excited for everyone to enjoy them. The new lipstick line is made for redheads by redheads in the three essential colors every redhead should own. We custom-designed these shades to flatter all redheads and to be your go-to daily lipstick. Influencers like @withwonderandwhimsy are showing off their outfits when wearing the different shades of Finally Bold. Are you ready to start rocking your lipstick with a new outfit? Here are a few tips to help you style each shade.

Finally Bold® - Lipsticks for Redheads: $26

1. Won’t Wash You Out: Perfectly Nude

Nude lipstick is a must-have for everyone, but it can be hard to find the right shade for redheads. Lots of nude lipsticks are too fark for fair-skinned redheads, or wash you out. Perfectly Nude is just that — the perfect nude shade for redheads. Because it’s a nude, you can pair this shade with any outfit, but a few ways we love to rock it are:

  • Business / Work Wear: A nude lip is elegant and understated but still very chic. It won’t clash with any colors you choose to wear, and pairs great with neutrals too.
  • Neutral Top + Jeans: Dressed up or down, a neutral-colored top with some denim on the bottom is a staple look. Pair this classic look with a classic lip shade like nude.
  • Cool-Toned Looks: Wearing something more cool-toned? A nude lip is the perfect way to make sure you’re not clashing!

Won't Wash You Out: Perfectly Nude: $26

2. Pinking of You: Perfectly Pink

For some redheads, pink is their nude and it’s almost as versatile. A good pink shade adds color and definition to the lips without feeling overwhelming. It’s almost like your lips — but better. Like a nude lipstick, there really are no limits, but we love to rock Perfectly Pink with:

  • Casual Attire: For a pop of color and fun with any outfit, even the casual ones, we love a pink lipstick. It’s very natural and gives just the right amount of definition to the lips.
  • Anything Floral: It can be hard to pair florals, especially if they have a lot of color. The one color that seems to complement them all? Pink! Pair Perfectly Pink with a floral top, dress, or skirt.
  • Warm-Toned Looks: Another gorgeous way to balance your warm-toned looks is with some pink lipstick. It won’t compete with the warm colors, and won’t wash you out.

Pinking of You: Perfectly Pink: $26

3. RED-Y For This: Perfectly Red

The lipstick that scares so many redheads is red. You can rock it with confidence1 Red lipstick doesn’t go with every outfit, but it can be dressed up or down for a classic style.

  • Formal Attire: We love a red lip for a formal look, especially when wearing black, or RED! Of course nude and pink work wonders for formal attire too, but red really steals the show.
  • Red + White: The quintessential way to wear red lipstick is with a red and white outfit. This color combo can be dressed up or down, paired with denim, or made elegant and chic. Whatever your style, try out the red and white combo with Perfectly Red.
  • Dark Neutrals: Red can go with anything neutral, but a look we really love is pairing a red lip with a darker neutral like black, dark gray, navy blue, and deep earthy tans.

RED-Y For This: Perfectly Red: $26

For most redheads, the blonde brow struggle is real. Redheads often have lighter eyebrows compared to their hair color due to variations in melanin production. The same genetic factors that result in red hair can also affect the color of eyebrows and other body hair. While the exact reasons for blonde eyebrows in redheads aren’t fully understood, it’s likely related to the interplay of different pigmentation genes and how they influence melanin distribution throughout the body.

But putting science being us, the real-real is that having light blonde eyebrows can make it look like you have no brows at all — especially in contrast with your red hair. We often get questions about darkening eyebrows, rocking the light brow look, and of course, the best redhead brow products.

Did you know there are options for darkening your blonde redhead brows naturally*?! We know some redheads want a way to just wake up with dark brows without doing anything to them. Unfortunately, there’s no way to make the blonde brow hairs grow darker, but there are some DIY ways for darkening the existing hairs in a more “natural” way.

1. Castor Oil

Castor Oil is known to help darken light brows and lashes. Simply apply a light coat to your brows with a spoolie every night before bed. Castor oil is known for helping your hair to be thicker and fuller and could potentially help to darken blonde eyebrows. Over time, the castor oil can help darken the eyebrows naturally. Be consistent with the application for best results.

Using castor oil to darken blonde eyebrows for redheads has several pros and cons:

Pros:

1. Natural Solution: Castor oil is a natural and chemical-free option for darkening eyebrows, which can be appealing for those looking to avoid synthetic products.

2. Nourishing: Castor oil contains nutrients that can nourish the eyebrows, potentially promoting thicker and healthier growth over time.

3. Cost-effective: Castor oil is relatively inexpensive compared to other eyebrow darkening products, making it a budget-friendly option.

Cons:

1. Time-consuming: It may take several weeks or even months of consistent application to see noticeable results, which requires patience and commitment.

2. Variable Results: The effectiveness of castor oil in darkening eyebrows can vary from person to person, depending on factors like hair type, genetics, and individual response to the oil.

3. Potential Irritation: Some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to castor oil, especially if they have sensitive skin or existing skin conditions. It’s essential to perform a patch test before applying it to the eyebrows regularly.

Overall, while castor oil offers a natural and affordable option for darkening blonde eyebrows for redheads, it requires patience and may not be suitable for everyone due to potential skin reactions and variable results.

Castor Oil: $16

2. Henna

This natural vegetable dye can be used to tint your brows more “naturally.” Beware, henna can sometimes turn your brow hairs green if not done properly.

To darken blonde eyebrows with henna, choose a shade like light brown or auburn. Mix henna powder with water to form a paste. Clean brows, apply petroleum jelly around them, and use a brush to apply the paste. Let it dry for 30 mins to an hour, then leave it on for hours or overnight. Remove excess and avoid cleansers for 24 hours. Always patch test before use.

Using henna on blonde brows has its pros and cons:

Pros:

1. Natural Option: Henna is a natural dye derived from plants, making it a chemical-free alternative for coloring eyebrows.

2. Long-lasting Color: Henna can provide longer-lasting color compared to some other eyebrow tinting methods, typically lasting for several weeks.

3. Customizable Shades: Henna comes in various shades, allowing you to choose a color that matches your desired eyebrow shade, including options suitable for redheads.

Cons:

1. Limited Color Options: While henna offers a range of shades, the color outcome may still be limited compared to synthetic eyebrow dyes, especially for achieving lighter or more vibrant colors.

2. Time-consuming Process: Applying henna to the eyebrows can be a time-consuming process, requiring mixing the paste, application, drying time, and development time.

3. Potential Skin Staining: Henna has the potential to stain the skin around the eyebrows if not applied carefully, leading to temporary discoloration that may take time to fade.

Overall, henna provides a natural and long-lasting option for coloring blonde eyebrows, but it requires time and care during application to achieve the desired results while avoiding skin staining.

3. Cocoa Powder + Activated Charcoal

In an article from Byrdie, they claim you can darken brows with aloe, cocoa powder, activated charcoal, and vitamin E oil. “First, mix aloe vera gel, cocoa powder, and vitamin E oil. Add the activated charcoal powder to create your desired color. Apply this paste to your brows using a spoolie brush or Q-tip, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse.”

Using cocoa powder and activated charcoal to darken redhead brows has its advantages and disadvantages:

Pros:

1. Natural Ingredients: Both cocoa powder and activated charcoal are natural substances, making them a chemical-free option for darkening eyebrows.

2. Customizable Shades: You can adjust the ratio of cocoa powder to activated charcoal to achieve your desired eyebrow shade, allowing for customization based on personal preference.

3. Cost-effective: Cocoa powder and activated charcoal are generally affordable and readily available, making them a budget-friendly option for eyebrow darkening.

Cons:

1. Potential Messiness: Mixing cocoa powder and activated charcoal into a paste can be messy and may require some trial and error to get the consistency right for application.

2. Limited Lasting Power: Unlike some other eyebrow tinting methods, the color from cocoa powder and activated charcoal may not last as long and may require more frequent reapplication.

3. Variable Results: The effectiveness of cocoa powder and activated charcoal in darkening eyebrows can vary depending on factors such as hair type, skin tone, and individual response to the ingredients, leading to inconsistent results.

Overall, while cocoa powder and activated charcoal offer a natural and cost-effective option for darkening redhead brows, they may require more effort and maintenance compared to other eyebrow tinting methods, and results can vary.

*DISCLAIMERS:

If you use any products on your eyes, the FDA urges you to follow these safety tips:

  • If any eye cosmetic causes irritation, stop using it immediately. If irritation persists, see a doctor.
  • Avoid using eye cosmetics if you have an eye infection or the skin around the eye is inflamed. Wait until the area is healed. Discard any eye cosmetics you were using when you got the infection.
  • Be aware that there are bacteria on your hands that, if placed in the eye, could cause infections. Wash your hands before applying eye cosmetics.
  • Make sure that any instrument you place in the eye area is clean.
  • Don’t share your cosmetics. Another person’s bacteria may be hazardous to you.
  • Don’t allow cosmetics to become covered with dust or contaminated with dirt or soil. Keep containers clean.
  • Don’t use old containers of eye cosmetics. Manufacturers usually recommend discarding mascara two to four months after purchase.
  • Discard dried-up mascara. Don’t add saliva or water to moisten it. The bacteria from your mouth may grow in the mascara and cause infection. Adding water may introduce bacteria and will dilute the preservative that is intended to protect against microbial growth.
  • Don’t store cosmetics at temperatures above 85 degrees F. Cosmetics held for long periods in hot cars, for example, are more susceptible to deterioration of the preservative.
  • When applying or removing eye cosmetics, be careful not to scratch the eyeball or other sensitive area. Never apply or remove eye cosmetics in a moving vehicle.
  • Don’t use any cosmetics near your eyes unless they are intended specifically for that use. For instance, don’t use a lip liner as an eye liner. You may be exposing your eyes to contamination from your mouth, or to color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye.
  • Avoid color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye, such as “permanent” eyelash tints and kohl. Be especially careful to keep kohl away from children, since reports have linked it to lead poisoning.
  • Always be very careful!

When we talk about the redhead experience, it’s more than just having red hair. Yes, our redhead experience comes from the color of our hair, but non-redheads probably do not realize how much of an impact our hair color has on our lives, and what types of experiences we have out in the world. Have you ever wondered what common experiences and conversations are unique to redheads? We’re here to tell you:

1. Being Teased or Bullied for Our Hair Color

Almost any redhead you ask has a story about being teased or bullied for their hair color. For most redheads, it’s something that happens in childhood, but it’s known to happen to adults too.

2. The Journey to Loving Your Red Hair

With all the teasing, often comes some self-loathing. Even if a redhead isn’t directly impacted by the stigmas of red hair, it’s felt in society. That’s why so many redheads have a journey to loving their red hair. For some it’s easy, and for others, it’s a lifelong struggle — this is something many other hair colors do not experience.

3. Talking About Sun Safety / Skin Cancer

Everyone should be concerned with sun safety and preventing skin cancer, but for redheads, it’s a much more pressing topic. Redheads are far more likely to develop skin cancer than those without red hair, which means that from a young age, we have to take our sun protection very seriously. Thankfully, young redheads live in a world where wearing sunscreen is cool, but for adult redheads who grew up in a different time, it wasn’t always that way.

4. Correcting Misconceptions About Redheads

Most non-redheads seem to have some preconceived notions or misconceptions about redheads and of course, it becomes our job to correct them.

Some misconceptions about redheads include:

1. Hot temper: While there’s a stereotype that redheads have fiery tempers, temperament is individual and not determined by hair color.

2. Frequent hair color changes: Contrary to popular belief, many redheads have naturally vibrant hair and don’t need to dye it often.

3. Rareness: While red hair is less common globally, it’s not as rare as some may think. It occurs in around 1-2% of the world’s population.

4. Sun sensitivity: While redheads may have a higher risk of sunburn due to their fair skin, not all experience extreme photosensitivity or photophobia.

5. Personality traits: Just like people of any other hair color, redheads are diverse in personality traits and shouldn’t be stereotyped based on their hair color alone.

5. Having to Explain Where Your Hair Color Comes From

People always want an explanation of where you got your red hair. They want a full family tree breakdown, or to know your lineage. For some redheads, it’s easy to pinpoint, but for others all they know is the gene must be present. People also don’t usually know how red hair comes about, so that’s another thing we have to explain.

6. Struggling to Find Makeup

For redheads who wear makeup, it’s a pretty universal experience of not being able to find the right shade foundation, scrolling endlessly through photos trying to find someone who looks remotely like you to see what shade they’re wearing in a certain lipstick or blush. We hope that the H2BAR brow, mascara, and lip products can help ease this trouble for redheads, but we know it’s still a very real experience.

7. Not Understanding Your Skin

Redheads usually have sensitive skin, which may lead to skin conditions or reactions. Unless you have other redheads in your life, you may not know what to watch out for. Not understanding your skin can be confusing. Most of the time a dermatologist can help you out, but we know there are some out there not educated in redhead skin who might leave you with more questions than answers.

Redheads face many of the same issues regardless of age and can rely on our products through every stage of life. We know most makeup and beauty items are geared toward women in their 20s-40s, but let’s dive into why they can be used by all ages.

Why H2BAR products are great for teens

Having light brows and lashes can often make you stand out, and H2BAR products can be used to give redhead teens a super natural look.

Finally Have Lashes® Auburn Mascara is wonderful for giving your lashes just a light coat of color, while Finally Have Brows® can give a natural tint to the brow so it appears more defined. For mature redheads, they want products they know won’t irritate their eyes and skin, and will give them a nice, natural look.

Check out some of these awesome reviews we’ve gotten from mature redheads:

Finally Have Brows® Ultra Fine Pencil

“In the past everything on the consumer market was way too dark, too brown . Even auburns were really to dark for me. Blonde shades were too gray/taupe. At age 70 I’ve finally found the best match ever. Most people guess my age as being more like 50, so this finally looks like me and not an ‘old lady’ or ‘clown’. THANK YOU ! THANK YOU!” – Cynthia

Finally Have Brows® – Volumizing Brow Gel

“As a 70+ year old woman, I was unsure how I would like this face change. It took a few days to get use to the change to brow color that actually matched my natural (now colored) hair but I’m happy. Any chance you have a solid brow color (applied with a brush after a clear styling gel) in the works? Thank you!” – Lynda

Finally Have Lashes® Enhancing Mascara

“This is the best mascara I have ever used and being 68 years old, I have tried numerous mascara brands thru the years. It goes on easily, no clumps, lashes don’t stick together, and the color is perfect! It stays on all day without smudging, and doesn’t cause any problems with my sensitive eyes. Perfect for redheads.” – JW

Finally Have Brows® Ultra Fine Pencil

“This is a great product! The color is perfect for me. I am strawberry blonde-ish. My brows and lashes are very light. This is the best product I have ever used in my 54 years!” – Treena

Finally Have Brows® – Longwearing Brow Gel

“Thank you for your help. I wish this product had been around 50 years ago when I really needed it but I am glad to know about it now.” – Mary

Finally Have Brows® Ultra Fine Pencil

“I’ve been waiting for decades for the correct eyebrow color. Thank you!!” – Lee

Finally Have Lashes® Enhancing Mascara

“As I have aged I’ve developed allergies that were never part of my life when I was in my 20’s or even 40’s. Recently my eyes have become super sensitive to mascaras. Your products are outstanding. Bet you’re surprised to hear from a woman who just reached 70. Waited for your products my entire adult life. FINALLY MY EYES AREN’T ITCHING SORE OR WATERING WHEN USING MASCARA THANKS TO H2BAR!!!” – Cynthia
